How Dangerous Are The Cockroaches In Kansas City?

December 15, 2020

Nobody likes cockroaches. Some household pests have a reputation for being cute and harmless, but cockroaches are universally hated – and for good reason. Cockroaches contaminate food, spread disease, and can even cause asthma as they infest your home

So, how dangerous are the cockroaches in Kansas City?

Roaches thrive in damp, dark areas where they find food and shelter. They tend to dwell in filthy places like dumpsters, sewers, and compost piles. Since they spend their lives surrounded by trash and sewage, they carry a multitude of bacteria, viruses, and parasites with them.

Types Of Cockroaches In Kansas City

The most common types of cockroaches found in the Kansas City area are the American cockroach and the German cockroach.

While there are other species like the brown-banded cockroach and the wood cockroach which are also indigenous to the area, American cockroaches and German cockroaches infest homes in Kansas City more frequently than any other.

American cockroaches are big. Adults can grow up to three inches long, which makes the sight of them scurrying around your kitchen floor all the more terrifying. Not to mention, like many cockroach species, these things can fly when threatened.

American cockroaches can be identified by their reddish-brown coloration and the yellow band behind the head. They lay fewer eggs at a time than smaller roaches like the German cockroach but can still overrun your home or apartment if left untreated.

German cockroaches might not look as intimidating as their American cousins, but that doesn’t make them any less of a threat to your health and wellbeing.

German cockroaches grow to be about a half-inch in size and have a light brown coloration with two distinct black stripes behind the head. They use their smaller size to their advantage and can stow away inside boxes and bags without ever being noticed, bringing filth and disease into your home.

Female German cockroaches can lay up to forty eggs at a time, making population control difficult once they’ve begun to breed.

Can You Get Rid of Cockroaches?

Roaches are difficult pests to get rid of. You might have heard that cockroaches are so tough that they can withstand a nuclear explosion. And while this isn’t necessarily true (cockroaches do have a higher radiation tolerance than most animals), cockroaches are definitely hard to kill.

Besides their sheer speed and mobility, roaches are experts at squeezing into cracks and slipping out of reach. Even if you manage to catch one, their sturdy exoskeleton is resistant to damage from being crushed or smothered. And scariest of all, cockroaches are seemingly immune to many harsh chemicals and insecticides.

Cockroaches reproduce quickly and in large numbers. Female roaches carry their clutch of eggs until just before they hatch, storing their offspring in dark, out of reach areas. With virtually no predators to feed on them inside the home and a never-ending cycle of reproduction, a cockroach infestation can rapidly grow out of control.
